Texas Gov. Abbott issues new order barring local officials from mandating masks

In an attempt to circumvent Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order against mask demands, a small Texas school district has made facial coverings part of its dress code.

The board of the Paris Independent School District, which serves approximately 4,000 children, stated in a statement on Tuesday that the governor’s decision did not interfere with its ability to operate schools.

The district said that “The Board believes the dress code can be used to mitigate communicable health issues, and therefore has amended the PISD dress code to protect our students and employees,”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggested last month that all children in kindergarten through 12th grade, including those who have already been vaccinated, wear masks when returning to class.

Texas has witnessed a spike in Covid-19 infections, which has raised concerns due to the more transmissible delta version. The state has asked the federal government for five mortuary trailers to hold bodies. Abbott has reportedly requested hospitals to postpone several treatments to make room for coronavirus patients.

Abbott, a Republican, has opposed mask mandates and issued an executive order prohibiting local governments from enforcing them. Nonetheless, some school districts did so.
